Snippets of My Initial Mails on reaching the US……
I have been in UTA for the past 10 days but i have yet to meet American students. you turn your head and you see indians all around the place in big groups be it the computer lab, or any other place. the streets r deserted and if u see someone walking in the hot sun it gotta be an indian. This place is really hot (in terms of the weather) with temperatures reaching 40 and the climate being dry. You enter your residence and you suddenly feel cold and at nights it becomes really cold with the 24 hour AC system
You would like to know how different is it than living in India. The Americans r there in the administrative divisons always seem helpful and ever smiling unlike our govt. offices. Everything seems automised here especially when u go to the streets. You press a button to cross the road as there r hardly any living beings on the street.Arlington is basically a village with absolutely no form of public transportation despite places being so far off. Public transport is a problem in quite a few places in the US
You turn off electric switches the opposite way, you take time to adjust to left hand drive lest a car bumps into you from behind. these cars come speeding without a screech. You even drink water from public taps the opposite way.The taps open upwards at an angle.
College is in full swing and we have to be on our toes as we already had one surprise test.We are busy with homeworks and assignments and the first midterm exam is on the 27th of September. Some of the professors are really good but in some lectures u feel sleepy but cannot afford to miss out on anything. Nowadays since one of our professors has gone for some official purpose to china, We r having video screenings in class of his prerecorded lecture. As it is most of our lectures r recorded on videotape and can be viewed online later.
We have had movie screenings every weekends and I saw The Mummy returns last weekend. Occasionally there r welcome parties and we make it a point to attend them as free food is always welcome here. Normally we cook at home as it is very expensive outside unless u have an on campus job.A few days ago, we found time to have a potluck party at our home with around 10 people. Everyone made something and came to our place. My roommate made chicken and it was good. After a long time we ate good food (pulao, egg bhurji etc).It was fun…But then sadly after sometime we started discussing assignments. Kya kare…life is tough
